Shikuwasa Extract Powder (Nobiletin + Tangeretin 10%)

A water-dispersible extract of shikuwasa (Citrus depressa) from Okinawa, standardized to min. 10% polymethoxyflavones, measured as the sum of nobiletin and tangeretin. The flavones are held in a cyclic oligosaccharide, which makes them easier to dissolve in water. The producer's recommended intake is 10-45 mg of powder per day.

Process

How it is made

Shikuwasa grown in Okinawa is first pressed for juice. The peel that remains is extracted with hydrous ethanol, and the extract is combined with a cyclic oligosaccharide as it is made into powder. The specification sets polymethoxyflavones at min. 10%, measured as nobiletin plus tangeretin.

Nobiletin and tangeretin are fat-soluble, so on their own they dissolve poorly in water. In this powder they are held in a cyclic oligosaccharide (cyclodextrin) inclusion. In the producer's comparison, more nobiletin dissolved in water with the inclusion than without it, so the powder can be used in drinks and jellies at the recommended intake. The inclusion also tones down the typical bitterness of shikuwasa.

Buyer's checklist

What to ask any supplier

If you are comparing ingredients for a new SKU, these questions separate one material from another quickly.

How is the PMF figure defined?

Here polymethoxyflavones are the sum of nobiletin and tangeretin on an anhydrous basis, min. 10%. Other offers may state nobiletin alone or total flavonoids, so compare the definition, not only the number.

How will the carrier appear on your label?

The powder contains a cyclic oligosaccharide (cyclodextrin). The producer's labelling example is "shikuwasa extract / cyclic oligosaccharide"; check how your market lists it.

Does the dose fit your format?

The producer's recommended intake is 10-45 mg of powder per day. In a capsule or tablet this is a small share of each unit, so plan the blend for even distribution.

Is a citrus peel extract permitted for your product and market?

Some markets permit only listed botanicals or treat new extracts as novel foods. Check the status for your category before launch; registration of the finished product sits with the brand owner or importer.

Do you need halal certification?

A halal certificate is not part of the product documents. Supplements for the UAE need one, so raise it before you plan a UAE launch.

Shikuwasa Extract Powder: Nobiletin and Tangeretin at a Low Daily Dose

Shikuwasa Extract Powder is a standardized source of nobiletin and tangeretin, two polymethoxyflavones found mainly in citrus peel. The specification sets them at min. 10% of the powder, and the producer's recommended intake is 10-45 mg of powder per day, or 1.0-4.5 mg of polymethoxyflavones.

Because the dose is small, a little powder goes a long way: at 10-45 mg per day, 100 g covers about 2,200 to 10,000 daily intakes, and 1 kg about 22,000 to 100,000.

Formats

The producer documents use in supplements, health foods, drinks and jellies. The cyclodextrin inclusion lets the powder dissolve in water at the recommended intake, which opens up drinks and jellies, and it reduces the bitterness typical of shikuwasa. In capsules and tablets the powder makes up a small part of each unit.

Nobiletin and Tangeretin Explained: Citrus Polymethoxyflavones

Shikuwasa, the citrus

Shikuwasa (also spelled shiikuwasha or shikwasa, and known as hirami lemon) is Citrus depressa Hayata, a small citrus native to southern Japan and Taiwan. A study of 23 strains from Okinawa, Kagoshima and Taiwan found that their polymethoxyflavone levels, nobiletin and tangeretin among them, differ from strain to strain (Journal of Oleo Science, 2026).

What polymethoxyflavones are

Polymethoxyflavones (PMFs) are flavonoids in which several hydroxyl groups are replaced by methoxy groups. The plant builds them by O-methylation of flavonoids, and Citrus depressa is known to accumulate nobiletin in the peel of its fruit (BMC Plant Biology, 2016). Nobiletin carries six methoxy groups and tangeretin five; both are fat-soluble.

Why the peel

Citrus species differ in which PMFs they contain and in how much: a comparison of seven species detected 38 PMFs in total and found higher yields in wild-type species than in common commercial ones (Planta Medica, 2021). Shikuwasa peel, usually discarded after juicing, has been studied as a source of nobiletin and tangeretin; in that work, 50% ethanol extracted more flavonoids than water (Current Research in Food Science, 2022). This powder also starts from the peel left after juicing and uses hydrous ethanol.

The solubility problem and cyclodextrin

Nobiletin dissolves very poorly in water, below 1 µg/mL, which is why formulation work on it focuses on improving solubility (AAPS PharmSciTech, 2020). Cyclodextrins are ring-shaped oligosaccharides made from starch; a poorly water-soluble molecule can sit inside the ring, which helps it disperse in water. In this powder, nobiletin and tangeretin are held in such a cyclic oligosaccharide.

What research has looked at

Nobiletin has been widely studied. Laboratory and animal research has examined, among other topics, its interaction with the cellular circadian clock (review: Biochemistry (Moscow), 2020). This research was not conducted on this product and is not a claim for it; the statements a finished product may carry are set by the rules of its market.

  • Cyclodextrin (cyclic oligosaccharide): a ring-shaped oligosaccharide made from starch, used to hold poorly water-soluble molecules.
  • Anhydrous basis: a content figure calculated on the dry matter, with water excluded.
  • Loss on drying: the weight lost when the powder is dried, mostly water.
  • CFU: colony-forming units, the unit used for microbial counts, stated per gram.

Payment is 100% prepayment by SWIFT or Stripe, and orders ship from Japan 1-1.5 weeks after payment. Registered companies developing a product can request a free 5 g sample.

Which specification applies?

The specification sets polymethoxyflavones at min. 10% (nobiletin plus tangeretin, anhydrous basis), loss on drying at max. 8.0%, arsenic at max. 2 ppm, heavy metals at max. 20 ppm, total viable count at max. 1,000 CFU/g, fungal count at max. 300 CFU/g and coliforms negative. The powder is pale yellow to brown with a characteristic flavour and is stored sealed at room temperature. The specification is available before you order; the lot CoA and SDS are available on request.

What daily intake and formats does the producer document?

The producer's recommended intake is 10-45 mg of powder per day, which equals 1.0-4.5 mg of polymethoxyflavones. Documented uses are supplements, health foods, drinks and jellies. With the cyclodextrin inclusion, the powder dissolves in water at the recommended intake, and the inclusion also reduces the bitterness of shikuwasa.

What safety testing has been done on the ingredient?

The producer reports four safety studies: a human excess-intake test in which six adult men took 650 mg of the powder per day (65 mg of polymethoxyflavones) for 4 weeks, a bacterial reverse mutation (Ames) test, a single-dose oral toxicity test in rats at 2,000 mg/kg, and a 28-day repeated-dose oral toxicity test in rats at 250-1,000 mg/kg per day. The producer reports no adverse events in the human test. A halal certificate is not part of the product documents, so raise it before a project for the UAE.
